Woodbury County Courthouse
The original Victorian style courthouse, built entirely of kasota stone for a cost of $75,000 in 1878, was replaced by the present brick Prairie Style building finished in 1918 after three years of construction. The structure, designed by William LaBarthe Steele, is ornamental with elaborately sculptured stone on the exterior, and is adorned with thousands of colorful tiles depicting panoramic scenes on the first two interior floors, topped by a stained glass dome. A large multi-storied tower rises from the center to carry office space high above the streets of downtown Sioux City. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996, the courthouse holds an honor reserved for the very few structures considered to have a national significance in the architectural and cultural history of the United States.
