The Orpheum Theatre was built in 1927 and has endured many changes during the 73 years of its existence. It began as an opulent vaudeville and moving picture palace with the likes of Lillian Gish, Ethel Barrymore and Katherine Hepburn performing on its stage. Theatre productions continued to grace the Orpheum's stage until 1968, at which time the theatre was converted to a movie theatre. The movie theatre remained in operation until December 1992 when the Orpheum closed its doors for what many thought would be the last time. Then in the spring of 2000 the Orpheum Theatre Preservation Project, Ltd. began in earnest to restore the theatre to its former grandeur. The Orpheum reopened its doors in September 2001.
