Siouxland has a rich and fascinating history. Indigenous cultures were believed to have inhabited the area as long as 15,000 years ago. The 1700's saw the beginning of the fur trade with many native tribes dwelling along the banks of the Missouri River. In 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition stopped in what is now Woodbury County. The expedition saw its only casualty with the sudden illness and death of Sergeant Charles Floyd, who was buried high on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Captain Lewis recorded perhaps the first written description of this area where the Big Sioux and Floyd rivers join the Missouri. Forty-five years later, the same area saw the beginnings of a community taking shape.
